Post Secondary Education*

Many requests we’ve been receiving are related to education and scholarships, particularly for the Rohingya children and teenagers, who have recently been displaced and took refuge in Bangladesh. There are more than 200 post-secondary students now living in the Bangladesh refugee camp. They all used to be in colleges or universities if the Rohingyas were citizens of any country.

In the past few months, a lot of light has been shed on the refugee crisis in Bangladesh. Many countries and humanitarian NGOs have paid attention to their basic necessities such as food, shelter, and health but education remains one of the main important parts for them.

Due to this chronic persecution, Rohingya students have not afforded the opportunity to pursue higher education neither in Myanmar nor Bangladesh. According to our records, there are approximately 450 Rohingya students (youth) in refugee camps who have completed secondary education. However, less than one percent of these students have been able to secure enrollment in post-secondary institutions such as universities or colleges.  

At the same time, the available empirical evidence clearly suggests that Rohingya face a situation of widespread illiteracy, especially in the refugee camps. The illiteracy rate of the Rohingya community is estimated to be close to 95 percent or even more, one of the highest in Asia.

By providing formal education to the Rohingya youth, they will be in a position to further participate in the social, cultural, and economic development, outside of the classroom. Education is known to contribute to a reduction in poverty by teaching job skills and improving awareness of their rights, and the tools needed to exercise rights. Health risks are also further reduced by the availability of safe spaces for children, and with increased knowledge of hygiene and general health. This further reduces the possibility that Rohingya youth become involved in exploitative and illegal activities.

Considering the above context, and upon the request of Rohingya youth in the camps, the Canadian Rohingya Development Initiative (CRDI), proposes launching an education campaign for two Youth Learning Centres for Postsecondary Education in two different refugee camps of Nayapara and Kutupalong – in the Cox’s Bazar District.

Our target group: There are many talented Rohingya students in Burma/Myanmar and recently who fled to Bangladesh. We do have a plan for those who are living as refugees in India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and other countries. We prioritize those who do not have access to higher education at all due to their lack of financial means and opportunities.

Our goal: Our stated aim is to provide financial support to enable underprivileged and talented students to access to tertiary education. Increasing education is vital to ensure a sustainable, positive future and to continue the battle against illiteracy.
